Cervical spondylosis is a degenerative disease involving the inter-vertebral disc of the neck region. It is the most common cause of chronic neck pain with radiation to arms or trunk. Fourth to seventh cervical vertebrae are usually affected. Wear and tear with ageing or repeated trauma usually precipitates the complaint. The patient presents with neck pain and stiffness, numbness and weakness of the shoulders, hands and fingers. Pain can also be caused due to the wear and tear of the ligaments and tissues in the cervical region. In old age it occurs due to degeneration. It occurs in youngsters as one of main occupational disease due to prolonged working with computers.
Symptoms of cervical spondylosis includes :

- Kati vasti; warm oils are used in this treatment. A bridge like structure is created in the area of the neck and the oil is kept in that structure for a period of time.
- Ela kizhi: warm and medicated oil is applied over the painful areas
- Njavara kizhi: medicated rice, certain oil, milk, etc is mixed and applied over the affected area to relieve the pain.

Diet should be taken seriously for people suffering from this ailment. Salty, sour foods must be avoided. Exposure to cold weather must be avoided. Mild exercises should be done like walking, etc.

Its otherwise called the lower backache. Lumbar Spondylosis is the other term for back pain that is chronic in nature. It’s the degeneration of the joints that are present between the neural formina and the central vertebrate. The patients may feel a shock in the region of their legs or lower backs. It’s a severe condition of degeneration that is caused due to the wear and tear of the disc cartilage at lumbar level. This may also cause the additional extra deposits of calcium called as osteophytes due to inflammation in these regions.
