Njavarakizhi is one of the customary treatment methods of Astavaidya custom in Kerala. It is a special type of treatment therapy that is built on the principle of causing sweat in the body with the aid of medicated herbal rice. This therapy is one of the best therapies for rejuvenation. Bolus of njavara rice, which is boiled and medicated, is wrapped in hand-size cotton bags.
In the massage program, the Kizhi is dipped in warm decoctions. The patients sitting straight on the droni with legs outstretched. The masseurs on either side perform the fomentation process in the same manner. The movement of the hands during both fomentation and massage must be continually downwards. The fomentation continues with the patient on his/her back on the droni. There is also another attendant who supplies new kizhis, which are kept ready in a decoction. It is very essential to keep the kizhis at a constant temperature. The treatment is over once fomentation has been carried out in all the seven standard positions.
Njavarakizhi is very effective for the treatment of several ailments comprising rheumatism, joint and muscle pains, sciatica, slipped discs, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sexual disorders such like menstruation, infertility and nervous weaknesses. Besides that, it is likewise beneficial in the treatment of certain skin problems. The therapy can last for 60 to 90 minutes a day and continues for 7-14 days.
In this method of treatment warm medicated oil is squeezed over the patient’s body from a piece of cloth that is occasionally dipped in a bowl containing lukewarm medicated oil. Pizhichil is a distinctive form of treatment which is a combination of oil massage and heat treatment. The therapy has been used since ancient times. Pizhichil is an exceptional remedy for optimum relaxation in Ayurveda. The treatment is also useful for various ailments such as nervous weakness, sexual weakness, hypertension, Vata imbalances, and limbs emaciation.
During pizhichil therapy, the person undergoing the treatment is kept on the droni particularly made for this therapy. Before starting Pizhichil, right kind of oil should be applied on the head of the patient. In some circumstances, a thalam (herbal paste) is applied on the head. The treatment starts and ends with the patient in a sitting position. In the time in-between, the patient is made to lie flat while the application of Shirodhara goes on.
Pizhichil Treatment optimizes the blood circulation, nourishes muscles, nerve tissues and improves sexual ability. This method of treatment is also effective for Paraplegia, Hemiplegia and general debility. It gives full relaxation to the body and mind. It is very rejuvenating too.
The application of medicated oil or powders through the nostrils is called nasyam. Nasyam is a very significant treatment for illness in upper trunk including head and neck region. Nasal drops are run in each nostril for removal of excess bodily humors collected in sinuses, throat, nose & head areas.
It is done in Panchakarma, for 7 to 14 days.

Nasyam is excellent for chronic sinusitis, Headache, Throat diseases, Epilepsy, Catarrh, Migraine, dysphonia, Eye diseases and Cervical Spondyolosis.
