Disc bulge

There are pads that absorb the shock and act as protection between the spine bones. They are called discs. There may be times when they slip their location and cause a spinal disc herniation or disc bulge. This may occur due to faulty postures adopted by persons habitually, old age or certain injuries. People in the age group of 35 to 55 are most vulnerable to this problem as the water content and elasticity gradually decreases over time. Stress, diet, lifestyle changes may bring about this condition in youngsters too.

The pain may be pulsating or continuous and specific to a particular part of the body. Diagnosis is done by

  • CT scans
  • EMG or NCS

Ayurveda refers to this disease as a problem due to vata dohsa. Ayurveda aims at restoring the equilibirium through rejuvenation therapies and massages.

Ayurvedic treatments:

Treatments like nasyam, choornapinda swedem, shirodhara, vasti, navarakizhi, etc are usually done for the benefit of the patients. Treatment includes:

  • Kati vasti: medicated warm oil is applied over affected area along with herbal pastes. Therapy lasts upto 60 minutes.
  • Pizhichil: Rejuvenating warm oil is continuously poured over in a stream over the whole body for a certain amount of time.
  • Kizhi: medicated and special leaves are used for kizhi treatments. These are kept in special small sized cotton bags. They are warmed and massaged on the body soaked in warm oil.
