Many of our patients come to us after being advised surgery by orthopaedic specialists — and a large number of them have been able to avoid surgery through our Marma Chikitsa treatment. Conditions like disc prolapse, sciatica, and chronic back pain have responded well to our treatment approach.

However, every case is different. Our doctors will carefully examine your condition and medical reports before recommending a treatment plan. In some cases, we may advise that surgery is the better option. We always prioritize what is best for the patient.

Our in-patient plans run from 3 to 21 days. The plans most commonly followed are:

• 18 or 21 days — disc bulge, neck pain and low back pain
• 18 days — knee problems
• 15 days — rheumatoid arthritis

Within the same length, the plan is chosen on your condition and the nature of the disease. The exact duration is decided after the initial consultation with our doctors. Patients stay at the hospital for the full course, as treatments are administered daily.

Most of our treatments involve therapeutic massages and herbal applications that are gentle and soothing. Marma therapy involves precise pressure on specific energy points, which may cause mild discomfort initially but is not painful. Many patients find the overall treatment experience relaxing. Our therapists are experienced and attentive to patient comfort throughout the process.

Many patients experience noticeable pain relief within the first 5–7 days of treatment. However, the full benefit of treatment unfolds gradually over the weeks and months following your stay.

It is important to understand that Ayurvedic treatment works differently from conventional medicine — while initial relief may come quickly, complete recovery typically takes 3–6 months after the treatment course ends. During this period, patients follow prescribed rest, medicines, and lifestyle guidelines.

Patients sometimes ask for these, so we say it plainly. We do not offer:

• Any form of Vasti — Kati Vasti, Janu Vasti, Greeva Vasti, or the medicated-enema Basti
• Raktamokshana — bloodletting, including leech therapy
• Vamana — therapeutic emesis

Of the five classical Panchakarma procedures, the two we perform are Nasyam and Virechanam (therapeutic purgation). For the back, knee and neck we use therapies such as Upanaham and Marma Abhyangam instead of Vasti. The difference is explained in Marma Chikitsa vs Panchakarma.

Post-treatment care is crucial to recovery. After your treatment course, our doctors will provide detailed guidelines, which typically include:

• 2–3 months of restricted activity — avoid heavy lifting, prolonged standing, stair climbing, and long-distance travel
• Continuing prescribed Ayurvedic medicines and oils, usually for 3–6 months
• Following the recommended diet and gradually returning to normal activity

These precautions are especially important for disc-related conditions, as the treatment works by softening the affected tissues, which need time to heal and strengthen.

Yes. Your medicines — both internal medicines and medicated oils for external application — usually continue for 3 to 6 months after discharge. This typically costs roughly ₹5,000–6,000 a month.

Medicated oils are dispensed without a prescription. Every other medicine is dispensed only against a valid prescription, which means after a consultation with our doctors. For a fuller breakdown of costs, see our Ayurvedic treatment cost guide.

Yes. Our doctors follow up with patients regularly via phone calls after discharge. Ayurvedic medicines and therapeutic oils are couriered to patients at home as needed during the 3–6 months they are continued, so you do not need to return to the hospital for refills. This applies to patients across India and internationally.

Your treatment takes roughly 1 to 1½ hours a day, given by trained therapists as prescribed by your doctor, along with internal medicines. After that, you rest, with Ayurvedic meals served at the hospital. Patients are not allowed to go outside the hospital during the course.

The hospital is located in the peaceful village of Ezhupunna, surrounded by paddy fields and backwaters — many patients describe the experience as a "home away from home" that is both healing and restful.

Yes, where they are needed. During admission our doctors may check tests such as fasting blood sugar (FBS), HbA1c, lipid profile, liver function (LFT), kidney function (RFT) and vitamin D3, along with any other blood test your condition calls for. Where needed, tests are repeated during your stay.

The hospital provides a strictly Ayurvedic diet — freshly prepared, boiled and steamed Kerala-style meals (rice-based) designed to support the healing process. Deep-fried and heavily spiced food is avoided. Herbal drinking water is served twice daily. The food is included as part of your stay at approximately Rs 350 per day per person. If you have specific dietary needs, inform the staff in advance.

Yes, a family member or attendant can stay with the patient. We provide single and double rooms (AC and non-AC options available). Food can be arranged for attendants as well.

The total cost of treatment comprises two parts: treatment costs, and other expenses such as food and accommodation.

• Food expenses are approximately Rs 350 per day per person.

Yes. Most health insurance companies that cover Ayurvedic treatment will reimburse treatment at Agasthya. We provide all required documentation for insurance claims.

Karkidaka Chikitsa is a special Ayurvedic treatment package offered during the Malayalam month of Karkidakam (typically mid-July to mid-August). This period is traditionally considered the most effective time for Ayurvedic treatment, as the monsoon climate enhances the body's receptivity to herbal medicines and therapies.
